What do I need to know before I start filming in Morocco?

Morocco is part of the Arab world, is Muslim, as its constitution states, and has had a royal family that has reigned uninterruptedly for four centuries. It is part of West Africa, where it shares a common history, language (French), and religion (Islam), and it has had close and conflicted relations for more than eight centuries.

The Story of Morocco

Understanding Morocco and Moroccans is so important for people who want to tell stories about this country to their audiences. These are some truths for film crews coming to Morocco to film.

In Morocco – and for centuries – political and territorial autonomy has been of great importance to the Moroccans (who have been an independent nation for 12 centuries). Since 1663, however, Morocco has remained politically the same state, ruled by the Alawite family. Today, Mohamed VI is the 23rd king of this dynasty.

During its history, it changed its borders more than 1000 times, but it managed to survive the torrential storms of the Mediterranean conflicts, and so today it is the Kingdom of MOROCCO. Its borders were inherited from the French colonization during the 20th century. It should be noted that between 1912 and 1953, during the French colonization, Morocco lost more than 60% of its territory.

It seems that we must understand that Morocco was the promised land for the crossing of cultures, religions, and ethnicities, this is the historical truth, the real history does not begin with the arrival of the Muslims 14 centuries ago… The world’s oldest Homo sapiens was found in 2017 in Irhoud, a small village not far from the Atlantic coast in the center of the country, dating back around 315,000 years.

How to communicate in Morocco?

Today, in Morocco, there are 5 different dialects: 2 Arabs and 3 Berbers; Islam is the religion of the state but it does not prevail in the daily life of Moroccan society, the priority is for a certain openness that can be noticed especially in the big cities of Morocco.

It is easier to communicate in French in Morocco, and also in Spanish in the north and south of the country. The new generation prefers to speak English.

For foreign film crews, Morocco still offers opportunities to tell wonderful stories with beautiful natural lighting, those who have already experienced this can never annoy me.

Since 1999, our small team has chosen to accompany television crews during their stay in Morocco to explain the culture and traditions of the Moroccans. We are always there to tell you this wonderful story of Morocco that has not yet been told.
